Below is the interview of our Vice President of Education (VPE), CC Vanessa Hendriadi about her experience in joining Toastmasters competitions. 1. When did you join Toastmasters and why? I joined JTC in July 2007 and just like most of us members, I wanted to gain confidence and be an effective public speaker. I am an extrovert by nature, and one of the drawbacks is: I speak before I think. By joining Toastmasters, I learn how to better organize my train of thought and convey my message more proficiently – that is : think before I speak. 2. Which contests have you participated since you became a member? I have participated in every contest since I joined Toastmasters: - International speech contest 2008 (1st runner up Division I) - Evaluation contest 2008 ( semi finals District 51 – Bali) - Table Topic contest 2009 (winner Jakarta Toastmasters Club) - International speech contest 2009 (finalist District 51 – Kuching Malaysia)
3. What did you gain from joining contests ? Even though I always learn from coming to regular meetings, contest is a different ball game. In a contest, people tend to set the bar higher because they want to win, hence I was able to see bigger and better talents. The expectancy is higher, so we get to see everyone’s true potential. In addition to the public speaking aspect, I was able to meet more people from other clubs, expand my network, and have fun, all at the same time. For me, joining contests speeds up my journey in Toastmasters because I learned to : - conquer my fear - come out of my comfort zone - witness amazing speeches from other clubs 4. How do you handle nervousness in giving a speech? Any experience you would like to share with us? In the semi final round on the District level of the International Speech Contest in Kuching (Malaysia) this year, there were “only” about 50 people in the audience. When I passed that round, someone told me that there would be around 500 people watching on the Final round… My silent reaction: “how big is 500? Is it as big as weddings in Jakarta?” It felt really intimidating! To handle my nervousness , I practiced, practiced and practiced. I tried to visualize a big crowd in front of me when I practiced. Then on the final, I went on stage , then paused for 2 seconds to gaze from left to right and right to left. That helped me to relax and felt more comfortable before I started my speech. Remember, sometime, silence is king in public speaking.
Final comments from Vanessa: JOIN A CONTEST! The return is bigger than your investment. Even though as a contestant you have to invest some time in finding a topic and rehearsing , you will get your prize, whether you win the award or not. Same goes for the contest official . You will learn how to handle nervousness, how to improve your skills and how to become a better speaker and leader faster . Be fearless and discover what you truly are capable of.
So what are you waiting for ? Join us at the two Jakarta Toastmasters Club's contests in January 2010:
- International Speech Contest (at least finished 6th speech project from basic manual "Competent Communication") - Table Topics Contest (all members eligible)
